Beetroot kola

Today morning I prepared beetroot kola. We can call is as beetroot vadai too. But there is slight difference between vadai and kola. In kola small onions used and it grinded along with other ingredients , but for vadai, any onion may be used but it is not grinded.  Usually kids won't like any other curry made from beetroot. But they will like beetroot halwa, beetroot kola and beetroot soup. It is very good for kids's health. Usually I used to prepare it on holidays. But today morning, when I checked fridge for vegetables, beetroot only caught my eyes and my mind Immediately planned to make beetroot kola. It is chettinadu special dish. I learnt this dish from my mom. She used to prepare it frequently in our young days. Today I shared this kola with friends in office, they appreciated its taste and asked me to post this recipe in my blog. So now I am posting the recipe here. Morning itself I took some photos with idea to post in blog later. But all photos taken in hurry in the morning busy schedule.

Ingredients

Beetroot - 2 ( Small size)
Channa dhal - 1 cup
Small or big onion - 1/4 cup
Ginger -  1 pinch
Garlic  -   3 to 4
Coconut scrapped - 1/2 cup
Fried gram - 2 tsp
Poppy seeds - 1 tsp
Cloves, cinnamon stick - I pinch
Red chillies -  6 to 7 ( increase or decrease according to your taste)
Fennel seeds -1 tsp
Garam masala
Oil - as needed
Curry and coriander leaves - as needed

Method

Soak the channa dhal for one hour to two hours. Soak red chillies in the same water along with dhal.
First grind the red chilies and add channa dhall to it and grind without adding any water.  we can grind coarsely. Then grind coconut, poppy seeds,  cloves, chinamon stick, fennel seeds, ginger, garlic, small onion by adding very little amount of water. Take care that grinded items shouldn't be watery. Otherwise it will consumer lot of oil. So making of kola or vadai mainly depends on how we grind channel dhall and other ingredients.

In the mean time, saute the beetroot in Kadai with little oil, so that water in the beetroot absorbed and pleasant smell will come. This may take 5 minutes.

Now mix, grinded items , turmeric powder, salt , garam masala , nicely chopped onions ( onion need be added here if small onion is grinded with other ingrediants),  nicely chopped curry leaves, coriander with this beetroot . Mixture should turn like puttu.

Using this mixture make small balls.

In a Kadai add oil and deep fry these balls. Now u got tasty beetroot kola ir vadai.

It will consume time and should be prepared with much care. But this little pain will fetch us great name from our loved ones for serving them a tasty dish.
