Ellu sadam / Sesame rice

My aunty in Mayiladuthurai is very famous in preparing this rice. During kaanum Pongal she used to prepare it which is so tasty and I love it so much. From her I learned this recipe. This is also an easy recipe and better lunch box recipe for kids. Try it and comment your views. My kids too like this rice very much,  have to cook more rice than usual on our home  for this recipe, because everyone eat it well. Atleast twice in a month I used to prepared it. You can also prepare seasame seed mix and store in air tight container for two months and can used it whenever needed.

Ingredients

      Rice – 1 cup
Black  Sesame Seeds – 2 heaped tbsp ( white also may be used, but I like black only)
      Urad Dal – 1 tsp
      Dried Red Chillies – 1 or 2

For seasoning

        Oil – 1 tbsp
        Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Channa dhal or Peanuts  – 2 tbs
        Curry Leaves – few leaves

Method

Cook the rice. Spread on a wide plate and add salt, little sesame oil, separate the grains with a spoon or  fork and allow it to cool.

Heat a pan, dry roast the sesame seeds in low flame.

Heat ½ tsp of oil and fry urad dal and red chillies. ( can add little channa dal also)

Powder the sesame seeds. Run the mixie in short pulses. Dont over grind it. Powder fried urad dal chillies also and Keep aside

Heat rest of the oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds and channa dhal. Fry till channa dhals are roasted. Then add the curry leaves. Add cooked rice, powders and mix everything well.

       Serve with vadagam or thuvaiyal.
