Vazhapoo or Banana flower paruppu usili

Today I prepared more kulambu for lunch. So better side dish for more kulambu is either potato fry or paruppu usili. I preferred paruppu usili since I have vazhapoo in my stock, day before yesterday being Sunday I have time to clean vazhapoo and kept in fridge. This is one of the healthier side dish. From young age itself practise your kids to eat all these and they will grow as very strong. This vazhapoo is good for ladies particularly to keep their uterus strong. This is one of our wonderful healthy traditional recipe.

Ingredients

Banana flower (vazhapoo)  1 flower
Bengal gram dhal - 1/2 cup
Toor dhal: 1/4 cup
Red chillies - 3 to 4 ( according to your taste)
Hing powder - 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Oil - as needed
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Urad dhal: 1 tsp
Curry leaves: a sprig
Salt as needed

Method

Soak dhals for two hours.

Grind it along with red chilies, hing powder, salt to coarse paste without adding water. I added fennel seeds little.

Steam the grinded mix in idly steamer.

When it is cooled down, pulse the dhal in mixie cup for one second so that it crumbles well. You can also crumble with hand, but mixie will evenly crumble the cooked dhal. Some used to add dhal without cooking. But that method requires lot of oil. This is easy and simple method with less oil. So I always prefer this.

Cook nicely chopped vazhapoo in water along with turmeric powder. Add little water and take care that it is not over cooked. If you have added excess water, filter it. But it is better if you cook with little water, so that before cooking all water is observed.

In a pan add oil, season with mustard seeds, urad dhal, curry leaves,

then add dhal mix and fry well till dhal become crispy. Normally it takes 5 minutes.

Then add cooked vazhapoo and mix everything well and fry for few minutes in medium flame and switch off the flame.

This vazhapoo usili tastes well with all South Indian kulambu varities.

Instead of vazhapoo, you can use beans, cabbage etc. Even can try with any new combo of vegetables. I will post one such vegetable combo later.
