Thiruvathirai Kali

Thiruvathirai kali is a famous dish in thanjur district. In our home, mostly we used to have sathuvmaavu (the flour we used for Kali). If no snacks available, you can simply add, sugar, coconut and water to the flour, mix well and can eat it. My grandfather's favourite dish. With this flour only we make Kali. It is used to be prepared on the auspicious day for Lord Shiva on Aarudhra dharisanam day. Being Sunday I prepared this for kids today.

Ingredients

Rice - 1 cup ( Pulungal aarisi)
Jaggery - 1 1/2 cup
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Ghee - 1/4 cup
Cardamom - 1/4 tsp
Cashew nuts - as needed
Water  - 2 1/2 cups

Method

Dry roast rice in a pan till it turns light golden brown in color. Keep the flames low while frying.

Dry grind the rice coarsely like rava. Keep it aside. ( you can roast it bulk in some shops and get it grinded in machine and store for long used)

Melt jaggery in little water and filter it to remove impurities.

Take a kadai , add jaggery water and bring it to boil.

Add rice rava,  ghee and water and coconut and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

After the pressure subsides, remove it, add little ghee and cardamom powder.

Mix well and cook for 2 minutes. Thiruvathirai kali is ready.

Decorate with roasted cashew nuts.
